Professor Smirnov is a leading specialist in nephrology and the author of over 300 scientific papers in Russia and abroad, including six monographs and three patents, as well as the co-author of clinical guidelines and recommendations on nephrology. Under his leadership, more than ten dissertations for the title of Candidate of Medical Sciences and four for the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences have been successfully defended. His H-index is 22 and 4, according to the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) and SCOPUS, respectively.  

Professor Smirnov strives to ensure that nephrology is seen as an integrative science. The first in the Russian Federation to advance the concepts of chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury, he also developed the concept of the cardiorenal continuum. As well as regularly speaking at international and All-Russian congresses and conferences, he also organises many of them – in particular, an international conference dedicated to World Kidney Day, which was held at the the First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg in 2014.

Prof. Smirnov has been editor-in-chief of the Nephrology (Saint-Petersburg) Journal since its foundation in 1997. Under his leadership, the Journal became increasingly multidisciplinary. With the active participation of the Journal, symposiums are regularly held within the framework of the postgraduate education programme. With respect to international collaboration, Prof. Smirnov appears in the role of main coordinator. On his initiative and with his active participation, scientific contacts were established with the world's leading nephrological clinics: Nephrology Centre of Lower Saxony (Hann. Muenden, Germany), Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA), Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA, USA). Within the framework of this cooperation, the Fourth international postgraduate seminar Current Issues in Nephrology and DialysisMeeting of Four Clinics was held in 2011 with the participation of prominent foreign scientists and practicing nephrologists.

Prof. A.V. Smirnov is a member of the editorial board of the following scientific and practical peer-reviewed Journals: The Scientific Notes of the St. Petersburg State Medical University, Clinical Nephrology, Nephrology and Dialysis and, in this capacity, has reviewed numerous articles proposed for publication in foreign journals. (РИНЦ) (Scopus) (ORCID) (ReseacherID)
